Resounding “No” in Kavala to CO₂ storage plan
More than 5,000 residents from Taşöz (Thassos), Kavala and surrounding areas gathered at midday on Thursday in the historic Kapnergatis Square, sending a clear and forceful message against the installation of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technology in the subsea tunnels of the Prinos field.
The large-scale demonstration brought together dozens of associations, trade unions and institutional bodies, all united in opposition to the project. Protesters stressed that the local community stands firmly together and is determined to protect the region’s natural environment and quality of life.
Among those attending and addressing the crowd were the Mayor of Thassos, Lefteris Kyriakidis, and the Mayor of Nestos, Savvas Michailidis. One of the most emotional moments of the rally came from a representative of farmers and livestock breeders, who told the crowd: “We want you by our side. We stand with you in the struggle for life and survival.”
Throughout the demonstration, protesters chanted slogans such as:
“Our Thassos belongs to us – it is not a storage site!”
“Kavala and Thassos, united as one – there is no place for a dump in our gulf!”
“They talk about profits and losses; we talk about human lives!”
“You care only about your profits. We will keep shouting: we demand oxygen!”
Organizers expressed hope that the strong and united “No” voiced by local society would be heard as far as Parliament, ahead of the upcoming vote on the relevant bill, which is expected to be brought before the Hellenic Parliament in the near future.
