Red alert in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace: State of emergency warning issued

Severe weather conditions continue to affect the Eastern Macedonia and Thrace region, prompting the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY) to issue a red alert for İskeçe, Rhodope, and Dedeağaç.

Heavy rainfall persisting for hours has increased the risk of flooding, lightning, and hail, with authorities urging residents to remain indoors unless absolutely necessary. Reports indicate waterlogging in low-lying areas, slippery roads, and reduced visibility.

At 22:25 on October 2, the General Secretariat for Civil Protection sent an emergency alert to residents’ mobile phones, warning that severe rainfall and storms would continue until midday October 3. The alert advised citizens to exercise caution when traveling, follow official instructions, and call 112 in case of emergencies.

Civil Protection authorities also recommended that residents living in basements and ground-floor homes take extra precautions, while drivers were urged to avoid flooded roads.

According to EMY forecasts, heavy rainfall is expected to persist in the coming hours. Officials stressed the importance of monitoring 112 emergency alerts and local weather warnings.
