4 metropolitans, who opposed the possible change in the election of mufti of the Athens government, sent a letter of protest to Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
The metropolitans wanted the muftis in Western Thrace to be elected by themselves. Reacting to the situation, the European Western Thrace Turkish Federation said, "Then let Turkey elect the Patriarch."
Halit Habipoğlu, President of the European Western Thrace Turkish Federation (ABTTF), reacted to the letter of the metropolitans. Habipoğlu said, "Now, the Metropolitans are opposing a possible arrangement that envisages the election of our Muftis, then I would like to say to our Metropolitans: On the basis of reciprocity, we can compare with our muftis in Western Thrace. Let them be appointed by the state and not by the Saint Synod from now on! I will also ask this from our homeland, Turkey. Will the metropolitans consent to this."
