Proud achievement by team led by Western Thrace doctor
A team led by Professor Cevat Tevfik, originally from Komotini (Gümülcine) in Western Thrace, achieved remarkable success at TEKNOFEST 2025, Turkey’s most prestigious technology event.
Under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Cevat Tevfik, a faculty member at the Department of Urology, Istanbul University Faculty of Medicine, the team won second place in the Health Technologies category.
The team, called RoboTaş AI, was directed by Prof. Tevfik and captained by Op. Dr. Rifat Burak Ergül, with members Dr. Res. Asst. Tunç Aydınoğlu, medical student Deniz Habip, electrical-electronics engineer Ahmet Sinan Kabakcı, and computer engineer Ozan Günceler.
RoboTaş AI developed an innovative AI-assisted robotic kidney stone surgery system capable of distinguishing between kidney stones and healthy kidney tissue. Powered by advanced real-time visual analysis algorithms, the system assists surgeons during operations, helping to shorten surgery times, improve stone removal rates, and maximize patient safety.
The project showcases how the combination of medical and engineering disciplines can produce powerful results in healthcare technology. By integrating artificial intelligence into surgical procedures, the team has taken a significant step forward and provided inspiration within Turkey’s medical technology field.
This award also highlights the pioneering vision of Istanbul University’s Department of Urology in embracing technology, innovation, and AI integration.
Led by Western Thracian Prof. Dr. Cevat Tevfik, the academic team and young researchers aim to continue producing impactful work in robotic surgery and AI-assisted medical applications at both national and international levels.
