No new wind farm to be built in the burned Areas of Meriç
Reports claiming that a new wind farm with eight turbines would be installed in the “Chylos” area of the Ferecik municipal unit have been refuted. The planned investment — consisting of eight wind turbines with a total capacity of 33.6 MW — will not move forward, according to sources from Gnomi familiar with the matter.
Although the environmental terms for the project were reportedly approved, the Decentralized Administration of Macedonia–Thrace is expected to issue a rejection decision. This decision aligns with an existing directive from the Ministry of Energy and Environment, which has suspended all licensing procedures for projects and activities such as wind farms in the burned regions of Evros since the 2023 wildfires.
Over the past two years, this directive has led to the systematic rejection of all related applications for wind turbine installations in those areas.
The proposed site for the project is located near the village of Melia, which was heavily affected by the fires, and lies within a Protected Zone for birds of prey — a further reason why the investment will not proceed.
