New outbreak of sheep and goat pox virus detected in Myrodato, Xanthi
A new outbreak of the sheep and goat pox virus has been identified in the Myrodato settlement of Xanthi, raising concerns among livestock breeders and veterinarians as the animal disease may spread throughout the regions of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace.
In response, Huseyin Zeybek, a member of parliament for the New Left in Xanthi, submitted a parliamentary question to the relevant ministry, sounding the alarm and calling for substantial measures to address a situation that appears to be spiraling out of control, with approximately 16,000 sheep and goats already culled.
Zeybek stated, "It is evident that the responsibility for the extent of the problem, despite the tireless efforts of veterinary services, rests with the government, which failed to take the necessary preventive measures and support livestock breeders in a timely manner. The lack of an emergency plan and delays in deploying personnel and resources highlight the government's indifference toward the primary sector, which is a key pillar of the local economy."
