New Left calls for olive growers to be included in support program

Hüseyin Zeybek, New Left MP for Xanthi, has submitted a parliamentary question regarding the exclusion of olive cultivation from Measure 23 of the 2023-2027 Rural Development Program (PAA) in the Hellenic Parliament.

Measure 23 provides compensation support for farmers whose production declined by over 30% in 2024. However, the exclusion of olive growers from this scheme has sparked strong reactions.

The motion, spearheaded by Zeybek—who also serves as New Left's Agricultural Policy Representative—was signed by nine New Left MPs and received the support of the party’s Parliamentary Group Leader, Alexis Haritsis.

The MPs emphasized that olive cultivation is one of the most vital sectors of the Greek agricultural economy, contributing significantly to the country’s economy with its deep-rooted tradition. They warned that excluding olive farmers from financial aid could cause severe economic difficulties, especially given climate change and market fluctuations.

Recognizing the essential role of olive farming in strengthening rural economies, the MPs posed the following questions to the Minister of Rural Development and Food:

  1. What were the reasons for excluding olive cultivation from Measure 23 of PAA 2023-2027?

2. Does the Ministry intend to reconsider this decision and include olive growers in the support scheme?

3. What alternative support measures are planned for olive producers facing declining yields?
