The Municipal Council of Myki has issued a strong statement opposing the potential closure or downgrading of the Xanthi Tax Office (Δ.Ο.Υ.), following the Independent Authority for Public Revenue’s (AADE) expressed intent to expand its centralized tax service model across Greece in 2025.

In its resolution, the council denounced the possible extension of centralization, already applied in urban centers like Athens and Thessaloniki, warning that such a move could have serious negative consequences for local society and the economy.

"The elimination or downgrading of existing tax offices would reduce the quality of services offered to citizens and impair the efficiency of tax administration," the statement reads. The council argues that such changes would hinder economic development in the region and go against the public interest.

The Myki Council emphasized that local tax offices must not only be preserved but strengthened, describing them as vital pillars of a fair and effective tax system serving both citizens and economic growth.

The Council called on the Greek state and AADE to reconsider the centralization strategy, urging authorities to take into account the needs of regional populations. It also expressed solidarity with tax office employees and their unions, supporting their mobilizations and institutional efforts to maintain local services.
