MP Özgür Ferhat meets with Minister of Agriculture and Food Kostas Tsiaras

Özgür Ferhat, MP of the New Left Party representing Rodopi, met with Minister of Agriculture and Food Kostas Tsiaras to address challenges facing the agricultural sector and to advocate for the needs of local producers in the Rodopi region.
During this productive meeting, the impact of climate change, particularly high temperatures, drought, and extreme weather conditions that have severely affected agricultural production in recent years, was highlighted.
MP Ferhat emphasized the need for higher compensation in cases of livestock diseases and additional financial support to address rising feed costs and declining animal populations. He also expressed concerns for tobacco producers in Rodopi, who face threats from low prices and adverse weather, urging support through the EU De Minimis program and other assistance programs. Minister Tsiaras acknowledged the importance of supporting the tobacco sector and stressed the need for a comprehensive strategic plan.
Additional topics discussed included challenges faced by beekeepers, cherry growers, and other local producers. MP Ferhat informed the minister of his previous discussions with ELGA President Likourentzos, where he presented improvement proposals.
Minister Tsiaras briefed Ferhat on progress regarding agricultural infrastructure, irrigation projects, and the utilization of European funds to strengthen agricultural development, particularly in regions like Rodopi. Special attention was given to cotton production, with Tsiaras emphasizing initiatives to highlight the unique qualities of Greek cotton and support the sector.
Expressing gratitude for the constructive dialogue, MP Ferhat reaffirmed his commitment to collaborating with the ministry to bolster the local economy and agricultural sector.
