Minister Tiaras meets with farmers, livestock breeders, fishermen
In the Eastern Macedonia and Thrace region, the challenges facing agriculture, livestock, fishing, and olive production were discussed in a meeting organized in Alexandroupoli, initiated by Regional Governor Hristodulos Topsidis. Minister of Agriculture and Food, Kostas Tsiaras, met with producers to listen to their concerns. The meeting was attended by local members of parliament, mayors, representatives from industry chambers, and officials from other relevant institutions.
In his opening speech, Governor Topsidis stated, "Our goal is to address the challenges faced by producers and take concrete steps to help them overcome these difficulties," and thanked Minister Tsiaras for his presence. Minister Tsiaras emphasized the government's support for producers during this difficult period, especially drawing attention to the challenges facing the agricultural sector in the Eastern Macedonia and Thrace region.
Among the main issues discussed were rising production costs, the impact of the large fires in 2023 on agricultural lands, pastures, and fishing, the need for adaptation to climate change, infrastructure investments, and access to financing. It was also emphasized that the government should provide more support to the agricultural sector, as these measures would ensure the sustainability of farming and livestock businesses and strengthen the local economy.
Governor Topsidis explained that local authorities have developed various solutions to ensure the sustainability of the agricultural sector, including irrigation and energy-saving projects. Additionally, land consolidation efforts for the region are progressing quickly, and work is ongoing to secure funds that will benefit the agricultural sector.
Governor Topsidis presented Minister Tsiaras with a letter requesting the postponement of overdue debts owed by livestock breeders in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace to public and private banks. It was stated that this postponement would provide relief to producers who have suffered significant losses in the livestock sector.
Minister Tsiaras assured that the government would review the requests and proposed solutions, and that they would work with full commitment to address the issues faced by producers in the region.
