Massacre in Evros: 47 wild animals poisoned to death
It was reported that 47 wild animals under protection were poisoned to death in Evros region of Western Thrace.
In the statement made by the Thrace Biodiversity Conservation Association, it was emphasised that mass animal deaths are increasing in protected areas and such incidents pose a great danger to the future of nature and animals in the region.
In the last month, 47 protected wild animals were killed with poison baits near Dadia-Lefkimi-Soufli National Park in Evros region, the statement said, adding that such cases have increased recently.
In the statement, it was shared that the investigation initiated by the Evros Forestry Administration regarding the incident is ongoing.
Five year ban on animal hunting in Evros
Hunting in the Evros region was banned for the next five years, due to the wildfires that damaged the forests in the summer.
The Environment and Energy Ministry issued the relevant order to the Forestry Directorate of Evros in order to ensure the necessary conditions for the protection, reproduction, and development of wildlife.
The fires, which burned approximately 962,000 stremmata (389,307 hectares) have caused a significant decrease in the fauna of the Evros region. This measure is aimed at restoring biological and ecological stability in the area.
