Evros Region launches €10,000 settlement support program for families

On Wednesday, July 2, Minister of Social Cohesion and Family Domna Michailidou met with municipal representatives from Orestiada, Didymoteicho, and Soufli to discuss the rollout of a new financial support program aimed at encouraging families to settle in the Evros (Meriç) region of northeastern Greece.

The program offers financial aid of up to €10,000 for families choosing to relocate to the area and is part of a broader effort to address population decline and boost local development.

Background and Legislation
The initiative was originally announced by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis during a visit to Orestiada in September 2024. It was later ratified in February 2025 through a legislative amendment presented to Parliament by former Minister Sofia Zacharaki.

Who Is Eligible?
The program targets both single-person and multi-person households willing to establish permanent residence in one of three municipalities in the Evros region: Orestiada (Kumçiftliği), Didymoteicho (Dimetoka), or Soufli (Sofulu).

Financial Support Breakdown
€10,000 for settling in communities with fewer than 500 residents.

€6,000 for settling in larger communities, with an additional €1,000 per child under 18, capped at €10,000 total.

Payment Scheme
The support will be disbursed in two equal installments:

First installment upon application approval.

Second installment after completing one year of continuous residence.

Objective and Budget
The program has a total budget of €8 million and is designed to reverse population decline in the Evros region and stimulate local economic growth. Authorities hope the initiative will attract new residents and strengthen the region’s demographic and social fabric.
