Makaza–Yanıköy road works near completion, officials announce reopening timeline
The officials provided the update through a joint social media statement on May 21, 2026, responding to growing public inquiries about the status of the route, which is a key cross-border transit corridor between Greece and Bulgaria.
The road section had suffered structural damage in February along the Makaza–Gümülcine highway due to subsidence, prompting extensive repair works.
According to information shared from contractors, asphalt paving is scheduled to be completed within the next two days, followed by road marking and traffic signage installation.
Authorities also confirmed that a temporary bypass route of approximately 1 kilometer has been in use during construction to maintain traffic flow.
Officials stated that full completion of the project is expected within 7 to 10 days, after which the road will return to full operational capacity for cross-border transport.
The Makaza crossing is widely used by drivers and residents in the region, and its reopening is expected to significantly ease travel between Greece and Bulgaria.
