Majority of Greeks do not trust Parliament or Government, Eurobarometer finds

According to a Eurobarometer public opinion survey conducted by the European Commission between October and November 2025 across all 27 EU member states, the vast majority of the Greek public lacks confidence in the country’s core political institutions.

The survey results show that 78% of people in Greece do not trust the national parliament, while 79% express distrust in the government. Across the European Union as a whole, the corresponding figures stand at 61% for national parliaments and 63% for governments.

Public skepticism extends beyond domestic institutions. In Greece, 58% of respondents say they do not trust the European Union, 54% are pessimistic about the EU’s future, and 61% report that they do not feel a sense of belonging to the EU.

At the same time, concern over misinformation is particularly high. An overwhelming 90% of Greeks believe that distorted or false news and information constitute a major threat to democracy.

ABTTF: “The Results Are a Serious Warning to the Political System”

Commenting on the findings, Halis Habipoglu, President of the Federation of Western Thrace Turks in Europe (ABTTF), said the results point to ongoing problems in the fields of democracy and the rule of law in Greece.

Habipoglu stressed that the widespread lack of trust in both the legislative and executive branches should be seen as a serious warning to the political establishment, particularly the government. He noted that recent debates surrounding legal issues and corruption have contributed to this climate of distrust and underlined the need for urgent measures to restore public confidence.

He also recalled that European Commission and European Parliament reports in recent years have highlighted democratic backsliding and rule-of-law concerns in Greece, reinforcing the significance of the survey’s findings.
