Major drug bust in Florina: 21.5 kilos of heroin seized
Greek police seized 21.5 kilograms of heroin in Florina on Friday, in what authorities described as the largest narcotics haul ever made by the Anti-Drug Unit of İskeçe.
A 50-year-old Albanian national was arrested near the Greek-Albanian border while carrying a travel backpack containing 43 nylon packages of heroin.
According to police, the operation was launched after the İskeçe Anti-Drug Unit received crucial intelligence that the suspect planned to smuggle a large quantity of heroin into Greece through a remote mountain path in Florina. Officers from İskeçe coordinated with their counterparts in Florina, who were familiar with the rugged terrain, to set up an ambush.
The suspect was intercepted at midday Friday and taken into custody without incident.
Authorities estimate the street value of the seized heroin at between €15 and €30 per gram, making the total haul worth several hundred thousand euros.
