Livestock crisis in Xanthi: 22,000 sheep and goats culled, regional economy in collapse

The outbreak of plague and sheep pox in the municipality of Topiros (İnhanlı), Xanthi, has deeply impacted the local community and economy.

"Over 90 Herds Lost, Families Struggling to Survive"

Deputy Mayor Cem Salihoğlu revealed that in the past year alone, 22,000 small ruminants have been culled in Topiros. The region, primarily dependent on agriculture and livestock farming, has been severely affected.

“More than 90 herds have been wiped out. Around 75-80% of these livestock owners relied solely on animal husbandry for their income, and 60% of them are from our community. Families who lost their animals are now facing both economic and psychological hardships,” Salihoğlu stated.

"Compensation is Insufficient, Restarting Livestock Farming is Impossible"

Salihoğlu criticized the inadequacy of compensation payments, explaining that the current maximum compensation per animal is €220—far from the estimated €400 required to restart farming.

"Additionally, due to the Ramsar conservation status of our region, livestock farming faces extremely strict regulations. Under these conditions, it is nearly impossible for anyone to return to this business," he warned.

"Economic Collapse and Migration on the Rise"

The crisis has not only impacted farmers but also veterinarians, feed suppliers, dairy producers, and the meat industry. With no means of sustaining their livelihood, some families have been forced to migrate abroad.

"If the government fails to take urgent action, livestock farming in the region will cease to exist, leading to devastating consequences for both the local and national economy," Salihoğlu concluded.

The livestock crisis in Xanthi’s Topiros municipality continues to devastate the region, with experts urging the government to take immediate action and increase compensation payments. Without concrete support, livestock farming in the area may face total collapse.
