A total of 19,000 small ruminants were culled across the Rhodope region from 2024 until January 2025 due to the outbreak of sheep pox.

As of today, April 2 (Wednesday), compensation payments have been issued to livestock farmers in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, who were forced to cull their herds due to the outbreak.

According to a statement by Manolis Tapatsas, Deputy Regional Governor for Rhodope, a total of €3,259,272 in compensation has been allocated to 74 eligible livestock farmers. He also reported that 18,597 small ruminants had been culled in the Rhodope region by January 29, 2025, due to the disease.

New Sheep Pox Cases in Rhodope
Meanwhile, after nearly two months without any reported cases, the zoonotic disease re-emerged in mid and late March, with two new outbreaks detected near Western and Eastern Rhodope.
