Komotini to showcase inclusive urban development at the European Week of Regions and Cities in Brussels

The Municipality of Komotini has been selected to participate in the European Week of Regions and Cities (EURegionsWeek), taking place in Brussels. The city will present its innovative approach to urban accessibility, positioning itself as one of the most inclusive cities in Europe.

EURegionsWeek is the largest annual event dedicated to EU cohesion policy, co-organized by the European Commission's Directorate-General for Regional and Urban Policy (DG REGIO) and the European Committee of the Regions (CoR). Komotini's participation follows a successful application highlighting its achievements in accessible urban planning.

As a city that has received multiple accolades — including the Access City Award (2021), recognition as a URBACT Good Practice City (2024), and ranking among the top 10 finalists for the European Capital of Inclusion and Diversity 2025 — Komotini continues to lead by example in inclusive development. It was also ranked first nationwide in Greece for disability infrastructure, according to a national public sector evaluation.

During the event, Komotini will take part in the session titled “Accessible City for ALL”, which is part of the official EURegionsWeek program under the thematic focus “Cohesion and Development for the Future.” The session, which will be held in person in Brussels, will feature short presentations and interactive discussions, focusing on the implementation of inclusive urban design through cross-sector collaboration.

The city will present audio-visual materials and direct testimonies from citizens with disabilities, showcasing how their involvement as equal partners has shaped policy decisions. The session is aimed at public sector professionals and representatives of organizations working in the fields of social inclusion and sustainable development.

In an official statement, the Municipality of Komotini emphasized the significance of its participation:

“Our involvement in #EURegionsWeek aligns with our strategic commitment to promoting cohesion, sustainability, and social inclusion. Komotini is proud to be recognized as a hub of innovation and collaboration at the European level. Ensuring accessibility in the built environment remains one of our highest political priorities — a measure of our commitment to inclusive civic life and cultural maturity.”

The Municipality is inviting the public to follow its campaign on social media to stay informed about the event’s progress and outcomes.
