The management of the Komotini Turkish Youth Union (GTGB) made a statement about the 29 January and celebrated the 29 January Ethnical Resistance and Solidarity Day of the minority community.
In its statement, the management said, "January 29, when the Turks of Western Thrace made their voices heard with their struggle against injustice, is the symbol of the glorious march, it is our national holiday".
The written statement released by the GTGB administration regarding the January 20 events is as follows:
“The Meaningful Day of the Western Thrace Turkish Minority”
January 29 is a symbol of the glorious march. We are celebrating the 34th anniversary of the glorious Turkishness march that took place 34 years ago today. This meaningful day of the Western Thrace Turkish Minority is an ethnical holiday for our people. Happy Ethnical Resistance and Social Solidarity day to all of us.
In 1988, at the request of the Greek administrators, the Supreme Court ruled that the names of Komotini Turkish Youth Union, Western Thrace Turkish Teachers' Union, and Xanthi Turkish Union, which are among the distinguished and honorable organizations of the Western Thrace Turkish Minority, despite international agreements and conventions. It is a day when the Western Thrace Turkish Minority will not remain silent and unresponsive against the removal of the word, and our people announced to the whole world their reaction to this attack on their own self and identity.
January 29th is an honorable and just action in which we fearlessly shout to the whole world that we are Turkish, regardless of the women, men, old people, young people, townspeople, or villagers of our society, against the attack against our Ethnical identity. Until then, repair permits were not given for our houses whose roofs were leaking, for our warehouses that had reached the point of demolition, and even driver's licenses were not given to our people so that they would not be able to use their cars and tractors comfortably. These examples are just a few of the injustices done to our people. After the Glorious March in which the Western Thrace Turkish Minority defended its rights, some of our rights were returned to us, although it did not satisfy our people.
On the second anniversary of this glorious march (January 29, 1990), ugly attacks took place by fanatical people who have not had their share of humanity. People with chains, irons, sticks, and masks broke the windows and doors of minority shops. They looted our goods. They beat and wounded our people… We would like to express that we condemn these inhuman acts with hatred today.
Although many years have passed since January 29, the ethnic identity of the Western Thrace Turkish Minority is still denied and their fundamental rights and freedoms continue to be prevented. The views and opinions of the Minority are disregarded in all matters concerning it. Our country, Greece, continues to deteriorate the autonomous status of minority education more and more each day by changing the class hours in minority schools on Friday, with a recent decree.
The Western Thrace Turkish Minority is an ethnic group that always respects its state and laws. All we want is the protection of our rights, which were given to us by international treaties and conventions years ago.
We would like to express our endless gratitude and respect to every member of the esteemed Western Thrace Turkish Minority who carried out that magnificent march that will set an example for our children.
