Greek Police chief meets Bulgarian authorities at EU border

On June 11, 2025, the General Regional Police Director of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, Brigadier General Lambros Tsiaras, visited Elhovo, Bulgaria, where he held meetings with Bulgarian authorities in the region near the Turkish border.

The visit took place in the context of Greece's participation in the newly formed EU Member States Police Force, deployed to assist Bulgaria in managing its external borders following the country’s full accession to the Schengen Area.

During the visit, Brig. Gen. Tsiaras was briefed on the operational and strategic cooperation between the EU countries contributing to the force, focusing on joint efforts to combat irregular migration. He was also informed about the deployment of police units in the Elhovo area, who conduct targeted checks and oversee border security operations.

He also met with Greek police personnel stationed in the region, emphasizing the importance of close coordination between all participating national forces to ensure the success and smooth functioning of the EU-led initiative.
