Greek MP raises alarm over clawback of farm subsidies, citing lack of transparency
A lawmaker from Greece’s New Left party has formally challenged government efforts to reclaim previously distributed agricultural subsidies, warning that the process is creating uncertainty and financial strain among farmers.
Hüseyin Zeybek, a member of parliament representing İskeçe, submitted a parliamentary question to the Greek Ministry of National Economy and Finance and the Greek Ministry of Rural Development and Food regarding the recovery of 2023 agricultural support payments.
Concerns Over “Unjustified” Repayment Demands
In his filing, Zeybek argued that farmers are being asked to return subsidies allegedly paid in error without clear or specific justification. He said the lack of transparency is fueling widespread concern across the agricultural sector.
According to the MP, official notices sent by tax authorities fail to provide sufficient detail—particularly regarding which agricultural parcels are under dispute—making it difficult for producers to understand or challenge the claims.
Farmers Struggle to Respond
Zeybek emphasized that the absence of individualized explanations undermines farmers’ ability to exercise their right to appeal effectively. Many producers, he noted, are left navigating a complex administrative process without adequate information.
The issue comes at a time when production costs remain elevated and some subsidy payments have yet to be fully disbursed, further exacerbating financial pressure on rural communities.
Calls for Transparency and Suspension of Repayments
The MP is demanding clarity on the number of affected farmers and the total amount being reclaimed. He also questioned why authorities have not issued detailed, case-specific explanations in their communications.
Zeybek called on the government to consider suspending repayment demands—or refraining from deductions—until the appeals process is completed. He also asked whether similar audits have been conducted for previous years and what their outcomes were.
Broader Implications for Agricultural Policy
The controversy highlights ongoing tensions around subsidy management, oversight, and accountability in Greece’s agricultural sector, where EU-backed support mechanisms play a critical role in sustaining rural livelihoods.
