Friendship and cultural exchange in Kocaeli: İskeçe Turkish Union Football Team completes four-day visit
The İskeçe Turkish Union football team completed a four-day friendship and cultural exchange program in Türkiye’s Kocaeli province, highlighting sports diplomacy and cross-community engagement between Western Thrace and Türkiye.
The program, held from April 16 to 19, combined sports activities with cultural visits, scientific education, and community meetings, reinforcing what organizers described as “brotherhood through sport.”
From City Tour to Natural Life Experience
The visit began in Izmit with a city tour introducing the team to local culture and daily life.
The delegation later visited Ormanya Natural Life Park, one of Europe’s largest wildlife and natural education areas, where players explored forest trails, observed wildlife such as deer and roe deer, and experienced panoramic views of the region.
Science, Community, and Diaspora Connections
On April 18, the team visited the Kocaeli Science Center, engaging in hands-on exhibits covering physics, energy, and astronomy simulations.
The delegation also met Western Thracian students studying at universities in Türkiye and visited community representatives at the Western Thrace Turks Solidarity Association, strengthening diaspora ties.
Stadium Atmosphere and Sporting Unity
The cultural exchange included attendance at a professional match between Kocaelispor and Göztepe S.K., where visiting youth participated in pre-match ceremonies and supported the home team from the stands.
The lively atmosphere featured mutual chants between supporters, symbolizing sportsmanship and friendship between the communities.
Friendly Match as the Final Highlight
The program concluded on April 19 with a friendly match between İskeçe Turkish Union and Kocaelispor U19 at a local facility.
Before kickoff, local officials delivered remarks emphasizing friendship and cooperation, followed by a ceremonial exchange of club pennants between team captains.
The match, symbolically kicked off by Kocaeli Metropolitan Mayor Tahir Büyükakın, was played in a highly respectful and competitive spirit, with spectators from both communities in attendance.

Organizers described the visit as a successful example of youth sports diplomacy, highlighting how football can serve as a bridge between communities across borders.
