Fight against drugs and precautions discussed at Çınar FM

Within the scope of 26 June World Anti-Drug Day, the fight against drugs and the measures that can be taken were discussed in the Kalimerhaba programme presented by journalist Necat Ahmet on 91.8 Çınar FM.

The guests of the programme were Sibel Mustafaoğlu, President of the Centre for Prevention and Psychosocial Support against Addiction in Rhodope Province (ORFEAS), Ahmet Osman Pehlivan, Vice-President and DMT State Assembly Member, Şerike Şerif, ORFEAS Psychologist, Refiye Bekir, President of the PTA of the 1st Turkish Minority Primary School in Komotini, and Reyhan Hasan, President of the PTA of the Turkish Minority Primary School in Yenice Neighbourhood. The guests informed the public about drugs, which pose a great danger especially for children and young people.

ORFEAS Executives informed the press members about the fight against drugs and the measures to be taken at a comprehensive press conference held at ORFEAS headquarters on Tuesday, 25 June 2024. Today, they gave detailed information about this struggle in the programme they participated in Çınar FM.

The guests informed the audience about the activities carried out by ORFEAS during the year. In particular, attention was drawn to the activities carried out together with state and minority schools to ensure that children and students stay away from drugs and other bad habits. The important role of PTAs in this fight was emphasised and the contribution of their activities in protecting children from drugs, alcohol, smoking, internet addiction, bullying and violence was explained.

The guests stated that Turkish Minority schools should be made more attractive as well as keeping their cultural values alive and emphasised the importance of making these schools a choice for parents. In addition, the guests stated that they have been fighting against drugs in cooperation with associations and municipalities throughout the year and explained that drug addiction is increasing at young ages in Greece and Europe, not only hashish but also synthetic drugs are preferred and the average age of use is 16.

In the programme, it was emphasised that it is much easier to take precautions against drugs than treatment and it was stated that it may be too late for some things when it comes to the treatment process. The guests also touched upon the issue of smoking addiction and explained that electronic cigarettes are extremely preferred among students and young people in the Western Thrace region and that it is touted as harmless but it causes the same harm as cigarettes.

The ORFEAS centre organises programmes on drugs, alcohol, smoking, internet, bullying, domestic violence, sex education and family communication throughout the year and these programmes are held in all schools in the Rhodope region from kindergarten to high school.
