Elderly woman in Gümülcine robbed of gold and coins by fraudsters posing as land agents
Police have uncovered a string of fraud cases targeting elderly citizens in the Rhodope and Meriç regions between September 22 and October 2, leading to the arrest of two suspects in İmrahor (Agrinio) and Piraeus.
According to reports, an elderly woman in Gümülcine was deceived over the phone by a scammer posing as a land agent, who falsely claimed she had outstanding tax debts. The suspect then sent an accomplice to the woman’s home, where they collected a large amount of gold coins and jewelry.
Following a meticulous investigation, police identified the rented car used by the perpetrators. The two suspects were apprehended on October 3 during coordinated operations in İmrahor and Piraeus, conducted jointly by the Gümülcine Crime Investigation Department and the Dedeağaç and Kumçiftliği police units.
Further investigation revealed that the same suspects had defrauded five other elderly victims in the Rhodope and Meriç regions using similar tactics. Their accomplices contacted victims by phone, tricking them with fabricated stories to hand over money, jewelry, and other valuables.
Police recovered several stolen gold coins, cash, and mobile phones, which have since been returned to their rightful owners.
The arrested suspects were brought before the Rhodope Magistrate’s Court to face charges.
