Police uncover seven fraud cases targeting elderly residents in Rhodope and Meriç

Greek police have uncovered six fraud cases and one attempted fraud targeting elderly residents in the Rhodope and Meriç regions, according to an investigation conducted by police units in Gümülcine (Komotini) and Dedeağaç (Alexandroupoli).

The cases reportedly occurred in August and involved suspects who allegedly posed as employees of accounting firms or public officials in order to deceive their victims.

SUSPECTS POSED AS ACCOUNTANTS AND PUBLIC OFFICIALS
According to the investigation, the suspects used various pretexts to persuade mainly elderly residents to hand over money and valuables.

Police determined that the suspects used individuals described as “collectors” to receive cash and jewelry from the victims. These individuals reportedly traveled by car to the victims’ homes, where they collected the money and valuables.

SUSPECT ARRESTED IN ATTICA
As part of the investigation, a Greek national was arrested in the Attica region on Monday, September 14.

Police also identified two foreign nationals who are believed to be connected to the cases.

Authorities said their investigation established links between the suspects and the fraud incidents reported in Rhodope and Evros during August.

MORE THAN €120,000 IN MONEY AND VALUABLES
According to the police assessment, the suspects obtained more than €120,000 in cash and valuables through their activities.

One of the reported incidents was not completed after the intended victim recognized the attempted fraud, according to authorities.

The investigation into the cases remains focused on establishing the full extent of the suspects’ activities and any additional incidents that may be connected to the group.
