Ecotourism and wind farms collide in Evros
The local community in northern Evros in northeastern Greece is opposing the licensing of wind farms in an area favored for ecotourism and environmental education.
According to Kathimerini, residents argue that the wind farms could disrupt the natural landscape and hinder eco-friendly tourism activities.
Two wind farms, one in Mavri Petra with eight turbines and another in Aetokorfi with 19 turbines, have recently been approved. Protests and petitions have been sent to the Ministry of Environment, while the Municipality of Orestiada has appealed to the Council of State.
Environmental groups and local experts stress that these projects will harm biodiversity and the local economy, which relies heavily on nature tourism and educational programs.
The opposition highlights a broader debate on balancing renewable energy development with preserving pristine environments.
