Eastern Macedonia and Thrace: Road safety education for students to continue in 2025–2026 school year

The successful Road Safety Program of the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace (EMT) will continue in the upcoming 2025–2026 school year, reaching even more schools and students, including those in remote and mountainous areas, as well as the islands of Thasos and Samothraki.

Last year, the program reached 7,940 students across 46 elementary, middle, and high schools, offering information sessions and awareness-raising activities.

The initiative is coordinated by the General Directorate of Transport and Communications in collaboration with the Regional Education Directorate and the Regional Police Directorate.

A recent planning meeting was held at the Region’s headquarters in Komotini, chaired by Regional Governor Christodoulos Topsidis, with the participation of:

  • Deputy Governors Irfan Chatzigene (Transport, Communications & Best Practices) and Stelios Katsogridakis (Education, Research & Youth),
  • Head of the General Directorate of Transport and Communications Pantelis Delidis,
  • Acting Director of Education Marigoula Kosmidou,
  • Representatives from the Regional Police Directorate.

During the meeting, the previous year’s results were evaluated. Students showed great interest and enthusiasm, especially during hands-on activities such as using cones and simulation goggles to mimic the effects of alcohol or substances. They actively engaged in discussions, showing increased awareness of road safety issues.

Governor Topsidis emphasized:

“Continuing and expanding our efforts to raise awareness among young people about road safety is our duty. Teaching children to respect traffic rules and behave responsibly on the road is not just an obligation but a form of respect for others. Together with our partners in education and law enforcement, we are shaping tomorrow’s responsible drivers and building a safer Region for all.”
