Damages of more than 40% in Rhodope tobaccos
Rodopi SYRIZA MP Dimitris Haritou visited on Friday the village of Passos (Basırlıköy) in the Municipality of Arriana (Kozlukebir) Rodopi, where he had a meeting with tobacco producers, the president of the Cooperative of Tobacco Producers of Thrace Sinan Ahmet, the head of Agricultural Compensation Institution-ELGA Thrace Dimitris Pantazis and officials of ELGA.
The Member of Parliament was informed by the tobacco producers and the ELGA administration of the fact that although damage from viruses is not part of the Organization's regulation, they are nevertheless monitoring the evolution of the phenomenon of attacks on tobacco crops in the region which will have a serious impact on this year's tobacco production.
The MP Mr. Haritou noted that it is now the sole responsibility of the government to show the corresponding political reflexes so as to compensate the affected tobacco producers of the Rhodopi region, the majority are small farmers and whose main income comes from agriculture.
Haritou reminded to the government that in the recent past in a similar outbreak of the virus phenomenon the SYRIZA government compensated the affected producers.
He informed the producers that he submitted a question to the Parliament to the Minister of Rural Development and Food requesting the fair compensation of the producers from the viruses.
