Bluetongue disease alarm in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace: Cases detected in five prefectures

Bluetongue disease cases have been detected in the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, according to an announcement by the Regional Veterinary Directorate. The disease has been reported in the prefectures of İskeçe, Drama, Kavala, Meriç, and Rhodope.

Authorities emphasized that bluetongue does not affect humans, as it only impacts sheep and, more rarely, cattle and goats. The disease is transmitted through insects (mainly biting midges).

To prevent the spread, quarantine zones have been established:

Control Zone: within a 20 km radius around infected holdings

Protection Zone: within a 100 km radius

Surveillance Zone: within a 150 km radius

Animal movements have been restricted according to zone classification, with limited exceptions for animals being transported directly for slaughter.

The Veterinary Directorate reported that all susceptible species (cattle, sheep, goats) in the region have been registered, and blood samples are being collected from suspected cases for laboratory testing.

Symptoms

Authorities listed the main symptoms of bluetongue as:

  • High fever (above 40.5 °C)
  • Fatigue and weakness
  • Salivation, nasal and eye discharge
  • Reddening of mouth and nasal mucosa
  • Swelling of lips and tongue
  • Lameness and miscarriages

Mortality rates vary between 2% and 30%, though many infected animals recover.

Official Recommendations

Farmers have been urged to:

  • Immediately report any suspected cases to local veterinary services.
  • Spray animal shelters and surroundings regularly to control insect populations.
  • Keep animals indoors after sunset when insects are most active.

Vaccinate livestock as a preventive measure.

Properly dispose of carcasses, either by incineration at approved facilities or by burial in accordance with regulations.

Authorities warned that dead animals must not be left in the open environment under any circumstances.
