Bahçeköy (Kipi) Border Gate modernization project officially launched
A long-anticipated step has finally been taken for the modernization of the Bahçeköy (Kipi) Border Gate, one of the key crossing points between Greece and Türkiye. The official contract enabling the project’s realization was signed today.
With a budget of €12.2 million, the project will include the construction of a new independent inspection lane dedicated to international commercial transport, including special provisions for heavy and oversized cargo. In addition, existing structures will be renovated to enhance energy efficiency and visual aesthetics, while prefabricated units will be installed for various functional uses.
These improvements are expected to accelerate border crossings, and make the customs area safer and more efficient for both travelers and trade operations.
The Macedonia-Thrace Central Administration, which is overseeing the initiative, emphasized that the investment will further strengthen Greece’s role in trade and logistics within Southeastern Europe.
During the signing ceremony, General Secretary Ioannis Savvas stated, “Today marks the end of the first phase and the beginning of the second,” acknowledging the support of Interior Minister Thodoris Livanios, ministry staff, and the former TAIPED (Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund).
The Central Administration not only conducted the preliminary feasibility studies and prepared the tendering process but will also supervise the implementation of the project.
