"Avalanche" of electronic scams with email and SMS messages in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace

The General Regional Police Directorate AMTH informs the citizens to avoid being deceived by sophisticated.

Let your friends and family know so they don't fall prey to scammers

The General Regional Police Directorate of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, on the occasion of incidents of defrauding citizens that have recently been reported in its areas of jurisdiction and aiming to inform our fellow citizens, especially the elderly and professionals, deems it appropriate to publish useful advice again, with the aim of the prevention and avoidance of similar incidents:

Be especially wary of messages (emails, SMS) purporting to be sent from banking outlets and which usually induce citizens to follow a link within the same email or SMS, which leads to a fake website that resembles those of the banks.

In this case, the vigilantes ask for the registration of personal bank details (username and password), which once the citizens fill in, the perpetrators intercept them, gain access to the citizens' bank accounts and immediately withdraw sums of money.

It is pointed out that another pretext that the perpetrators may use to ask you for your bank card details and bank account codes (username and password) is the payment of money for the purchase of goods or the provision of services.

For the above reasons remember:

Do not enter personal data and credit card information in forms sent from unknown e-mail addresses or messages or via hyperlinks.

To access a bank website, type the address in the browser and do not log in via hyperlinks.

We NEVER give out our bank card secret codes to ANYONE.

No bank or organization asks for our bank card secret codes.

Be suspicious of being asked for personal information via individual e-mails or sms.

Check the electronic address (URL) of the link they send you, as it is not the same as the original address of the website of the respective Banking Institution.

When the company you work with asks you to pay your debts to other bank accounts than the ones you were already using, verify this by contacting the company you work with.

Always inform the police authorities, even in the event of an attempted fraud against you.
