Armed clash erupts on Türkiye–Greece border
An armed clash between migrant smuggling groups along the Evros (Meriç) River, which forms the border between Türkiye and Greece, has put the border area on high alert.
One migrant was seriously injured after being shot in the abdomen, while security measures along the border line were raised to the highest level.
The incident took place in the Bosnaköy (Nea Vissa) area on the Greek side of the border, opposite the Turkish city of Edirne, heightening tensions along the Meriç corridor. An unidentified foreign national was found with a gunshot wound and was rushed under emergency conditions to Didymoteicho (Dimetoka) Hospital.
The emergency transfer of the critically injured individual required hospital medical and nursing staff to respond under extraordinary conditions. Following surgery, the wounded person was placed under intensive monitoring, with hospital sources saying his condition remains critical.
Smuggler Feud Suspected
While no official statement has yet been issued by authorities, security sources believe the incident stemmed from a confrontation between rival human smuggling networks. Increased activity by smuggler groups operating around the Meriç River has drawn attention in recent weeks. In the aftermath of the shooting, security measures along the river have been significantly reinforced.
