Anti-gold mining committee marks May day with protest gathering in Perama
Activists and local residents gathered in Perama on May Day for a protest organized by the Inter-Prefectural Committee of Rhodope and Meriç Against Gold Mining, reaffirming opposition to gold mining and metallurgical projects in the region.
Despite unfavorable weather conditions, including rain, strong winds, and low temperatures, participants from nearby villages as well as Dedeağaç, Gümülcine, and Şapçı attended the event, held on a hill overlooking the Sapes plain, the Black Pine forests, and the Thracian Sea, with Samothrace visible in the distance.
Local officials were also present, including representatives from the Municipality of Dedeağaç and Şapçı, as well as regional council member Ahmet Osman Pehlivan.
Participants reiterated their firm stance against proposed gold mining operations in the area, declaring that they would not allow what they described as environmentally harmful projects to proceed.
“We will never leave our land to the interests of gold prospectors,” organizers said in a statement.
Discussions during the gathering focused on recent developments and future steps in the ongoing campaign. Activists emphasized their commitment to defending environmental integrity, public health, and the dignity of local communities.
They also announced plans to push for a formal discussion at the regional council regarding a proposed gold mining project reportedly being developed by Bulgarian interests in the Rozino area.
May Day as a Symbol of Resistance
Organizers framed the event within the broader significance of International Workers’ Day, describing it not only as a day of remembrance but also as a call to action.
“May Day is a beacon for claiming our rights and defending our lives against profit-driven interests that undermine our quality of life,” the statement concluded.
The committee stated it will continue to inform the public about upcoming actions as the movement against gold mining in the region gains momentum.
