The Rhodope–Meriç Anti-Gold Mining Committee has called for this year’s International Workers' Day gathering to take place in Perama (Güreci), urging citizens to combine May Day commemorations with environmental activism.

In a press statement, the committee highlighted the natural significance of the area, describing it as a landscape rich in black pine forests, spring views, and archaeological heritage. The group warned that ongoing and proposed gold exploration activities threaten to irreversibly damage the area.

The statement emphasized that the May Day event will not only celebrate the arrival of spring but also honor historical struggles for workers’ rights, while promoting respect for human rights and the protection of nature.

Organizers framed the gathering as both a social and environmental mobilization, reflecting broader concerns about extractive industries and their long-term ecological impact in Northern Greece.

The committee has invited the public to attend the event on Friday, May 1, in Perama, where participants are expected to voice opposition to gold mining projects and reaffirm calls for sustainable development.
