Agricultural production in Kavala and Xanthi faces water shortages

Farmers in Kavala and Xanthi are facing serious irrigation challenges as the available water supply from the Nestos River continues to decline. In response, Kavala MP Nikos Panagiotopoulos of the New Democracy party has submitted a question to the Ministers of Environment and Rural Development, requesting measures to ensure sufficient water availability for this year’s irrigation season.
Mr. Panagiotopoulos highlights that, although the areas have been served for decades by an extensive irrigation network, reduced inflows into the Nestos River and the prioritization of hydropower production are severely limiting water reserves. This situation threatens high-value dynamic crops and undermines investments and export activities in the region.
The MP is urging the relevant ministries to review reservoir management practices and guarantee uninterrupted water supply to agricultural lands, stressing that the problem has reached a critical point for many local farmers' survival.
