Aerial spraying against mosquitoes has begun

The Eastern Macedonia and Thrace Region has officially launched the aerial spraying phase of its mosquito control program, following the start of ground-based spraying on 10 March 2025. On Monday, 14 April 2025, aerial spraying commenced in the Kavala Regional Unit using helicopters, and continued on Tuesday, 15 April 2025, in the Evros Regional Unit. On Wednesday, 16 April 2025, spraying took place in the Regional Units of Rodopi and Xanthi.
The mosquito control project involves comprehensive monitoring of both mosquito larvae and adult populations. The effort includes spraying from the ground in various environments, including rural, suburban, and urban areas, throughout the region. The aerial spraying complements the ground-based operations, which are critical for addressing mosquito breeding sites in different ecosystems.
Commitment to Public Health
The project employs special, approved substances that are safe for humans and the environment, with spraying scheduled at specific times to maximize effectiveness. In a statement, Kostas Venetidis, Deputy Regional Governor for Civil Protection, Climate Change Impacts, Infrastructure, and Works, emphasized the region's commitment to public health: "Together with Regional Governor Christodoulos Topsidis, we have made the protection of public health a top priority. We are efficiently mapping the needs of every corner of our region and implementing the spraying program—both ground and aerial—using the latest scientific advancements and modern technologies. This mosquito control program is being strictly applied across Eastern Macedonia and Thrace to ensure a healthy and safe summer for everyone—residents and visitors alike."
