Following a fire outbreak that occurred yesterday in Alexandroupoli (Evros), the region is now under a state of emergency.
A fire, for as yet an unidentified reason, started yesterday in Alexandroupoli. As a result, thousands of acres of pine forests in the Southern Evros region were burnt down, 8 houses and 2 churches were damaged, and 8 villages were evacuated as a precautionary measure. The Feres-Dedeağaç road was shut down due to security concerns. Smoke spread to Komotini, Xanthi, and partially to Volos. Authorities declared a state of emergency in the area.
The authorities in the city center of Alexandroupoli advised people to remain indoors with their windows closed to avoid exposure to the dense smoke.
Firefighting efforts are being carried out by ground and air units. However, the strong winds in the region are hampering firefighting operations.
