3,000 sheep culled due to smallpox in Meriç
The region’s veterinary task force, composed of local veterinarians, is carrying out these daily checks.
Nikos Fotinias, head of the Eastern Macedonia and Thrace Veterinary Services Directorate, stated that unfortunately, each inspection uncovers more positive cases. He emphasized that the disease has not yet spread beyond the region's borders, and there is strong cooperation between farmers and authorities.
Fotinias expressed appreciation for the farmers' proactive attitude, noting that their understanding of the highly contagious and dangerous nature of the disease has led to close collaboration with the task force.
So far, over 3,000 small ruminants infected with sheep smallpox have been culled in Meriç. While this has caused significant concern and frustration among farmers, Fotinias mentioned that they remain uncertain about the future and are seeking ways to support the affected livestock owners.
Farmers are particularly anxious about the government’s commitment to replace 100% of the culled animals, as announced by the responsible ministry, but remain skeptical about the feasibility of this promise.
