Turkish Foreign Minister Fidan Assesses Türkiye-Greece Relations
Minister Fidan noted that a process of normalization at the leadership level between the two countries has been initiated. He emphasized that as long as there is a suitable political actor on the Greek side, Türkiye remains focused on resolving issues through exploratory talks.
Both countries have demonstrated maximum sensitivity to reducing tensions, Fidan said, acknowledging the occurrence of certain incidents and provocations. However, he highlighted that Greece is currently adopting a stance aimed at maintaining a positive course of negotiations without escalating tensions.
Fidan stressed the existence of numerous issues between Türkiye and Greece, but both sides are exploring ways to address these challenges in a manner that serves their mutual interests. He underscored the value of this perspective in fostering constructive dialogue.
He also mentioned that a similar approach exists within Greece, and expressed hope for concrete results from the ongoing talks.
While Türkiye does not define its foreign policy solely in relation to Greece, Fidan remarked that during periods of right-wing governments in Greece, Türkiye has frequently been a central issue in Greek foreign policy. He added that Türkiye continues to work on progressing through more peaceful and diplomatic means, though the Turkish military remains prepared to counter any provocations.
