TFF rules out foreign referees, keeps VAR in hands of local officials
The Türkiye Football Federation (TFF) has decided that only Turkish referees will oversee the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system for the remainder of the 2025–26 Super Lig season, despite mounting controversy over officiating in the league’s opening weeks.
VAR controversies spark debate
With just three weeks played, a series of disputed VAR decisions — particularly in high-profile matches — has reignited calls from some clubs to bring back foreign referees. Criticism spread across social media, sports programs, and official club statements, with demands for “internationally experienced” referees to handle VAR duties.
Mixed results from foreign referee experiment
Last season, the TFF occasionally brought in foreign officials for VAR in heated fixtures. While their presence was initially welcomed, the experiment soon faced pushback. Some clubs complained about communication barriers and a lack of familiarity with Turkish football, while others praised the referees’ neutrality and experience.
TFF’s stance: building domestic refereeing
After discussions with the Central Referee Board (MHK), TFF confirmed that VAR will remain under the control of Turkish referees only. Officials stressed that the decision is aimed at strengthening the domestic refereeing system and supporting the long-term development of local officials.
Community remains divided
The football world is split on the issue. Supporters of the policy argue that errors are inevitable everywhere and that improving the system matters more than importing foreign referees. Critics, however, believe outsiders face less pressure and are more objective in critical moments.
For now, the federation views the move as a strategic investment in Turkish refereeing. Whether trust in local officials can outweigh demands for international experience will become clear in the weeks ahead.
