Schweinsteiger faces criticism over comments about Ivory Coast

Former Germany international Bastian Schweinsteiger has come under criticism after comments made during television coverage of Germany's World Cup match against Ivory Coast prompted accusations of stereotyping African football.

Working as a pundit for German broadcaster ARD ahead of the Group E match in Toronto, Schweinsteiger described Ivory Coast as playing "a bit African football, a bit unorthodox, a bit wild, a bit perhaps not so conditioned by tactics," adding that Germany should expect an unpredictable opponent.

The remarks drew criticism from commentators and anti-discrimination advocates, who argued they reinforced longstanding stereotypes about African football while overlooking the tactical development of teams across the continent.

Ivory Coast coach responds

Ivory Coast coach Emerse Fae said he was disappointed by Schweinsteiger's comments, describing them as surprising given his admiration for the former Bayern Munich and Germany midfielder.

"When I heard his comment, I was disappointed in the man," Fae said. "It is odd he would speak that way."

Fae said Ivory Coast's performances reflected a team built on tactical discipline, technical quality and physical strength, rejecting suggestions that the side relied on an unstructured style of play.

Wider debate over language in football

The controversy has reignited debate in Germany over the language used to describe African teams.

German magazine Der Spiegel argued that terms such as "wild" and "unpredictable" carry historical stereotypes linked to colonial-era portrayals of Africa. Anti-discrimination organization Kick It Out also criticized the comments, saying football broadcasters should be mindful of language that can reinforce bias.

Schweinsteiger later acknowledged Ivory Coast's technical quality and physical strength in a social media post but did not directly address the criticism over his remarks. Neither he nor ARD had issued a formal apology or detailed clarification at the time of reporting.

Ivory Coast advances

The debate followed Germany's 2-1 victory over Ivory Coast in Toronto, where Deniz Undav scored twice, including a stoppage-time winner, after Franck Kessie had given the Ivorians the lead.

Despite the defeat, Ivory Coast advanced from the group stage and later secured a place in the World Cup knockout rounds for the first time in the country's history with a 2-0 win over Curaçao.
