Panathinaikos has returned to the throne of Greek men’s volleyball, as it swept archrival Olympiakos in the final series of the Volley League.

Having lost the Greek Cup and the Super Cup to the Reds, the Greens focused their efforts on the league and managed to win back the title after three years.

The players of coach Dimitris Andreopoulos finished first in the regular season of the league, and went on to clinch the ticket to the finals beating PAOK 3-1 in the best-of-five semifinal series. Olympiakos needed five games to beat Milon and reach the finals.

The Greens had home advantage and won Game 1 of the final series with a 3-1 score at their home court in Mets. A week later they staged a remarkable comeback at Rentis to beat Olympiakos 3-2, even though they had trailed 2-0 on the night.

Then on Wednesday, with Game 3 at home, Panathinaikos led 1-0 set, then trailed 2-1, but bounced back to win 3-2 (25-23, 23-25, 25-27, 25-21, 17-15) and secure the league in front of 2,000 fans at Mets, with a sweeping 3-0 score in the series.

This is Panathinaikos’ 22nd Greek championship title in men’s volleyball.
