Yerapetritis: ‘Progress made in certain areas with Türkiye’

Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis addressed the ongoing dialogue between Greece and Türkiye in an interview with the Greek-American newspaper Ethnikos Kirikas ahead of his visit to New York for the United Nations Security Council meeting.
Gerapetritis acknowledged that progress has been made in certain areas of Greek-Turkish relations, highlighting the reduction of airspace-related incidents, strengthened cooperation on migration, and increased trade volume as positive developments.
However, he reaffirmed that Greece will not compromise on its sovereign rights, stating, “It is unrealistic to expect Turkey to abandon some of its longstanding demands. We are only open to negotiations based on international law concerning the delimitation of the continental shelf and the exclusive economic zone.”
Gerapetritis also accused Türkiye of turning issues in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean into a broader bargaining process. Despite the ongoing differences between the two countries, he stressed the need for continued dialogue.
Emphasizing the importance of keeping communication channels open, Gerapetritis underscored that diplomacy must remain a priority to ensure regional stability.
