Yanis Varoufakis attacked

Yanis Varoufakis was attacked on Friday night at the exit of a well-known restaurant in Athens' Exarchia district.

According to reports in the Greek media, the head of MeRA 25 was attacked by an alleged radical right-wing group from the restaurant. After being surrounded by the group, one of them punched and kicked Varoufakis. Injured Varoufakis was being treated at Evangelismos Hospital.

It has been reported that Yanis Varoufakis went to Evangelismos alone to get first aid.

It is reported that Varoufakis was threatened because he wanted to visit Exarchia and was attacked in 2015.

"Provocative attack"
A spokesperson for MeRA 25 said in a statement, "This is a provocative attack by 4 people. While Yanis Varoufakis (who was in Greece for a three-day conference) was meeting with the coordinator of Diem25, they entered the Yantes restaurant. It was almost professional (wearing black) people who filmed the attack from the very first moment. There's talk of a brutal attack."

Varoufakis was finance minister at the time of the economic crisis
Known for his economist and politician identities, Varoufakis entered the parliament as a deputy of the Radical Left Alliance Party (SYRIZA) in the 2015 general elections and became the finance minister of the SYRIZA government.

Varoufakis resigned from his post following SYRIZA's decision to sign the memorandum following the 2015 referendum, in which the Greek people said "no" to signing a memorandum with the European Union and IMF for the country's debts.

Varoufakis founded the Movement for Democracy in Europe (Diem25) in 2016, and entered the parliament in Greece with the Mera25 Party, which was established in 2018 under his leadership, with 3.44 percent of the votes in the 2019 general elections.

Mera25 got 9 out of 300 seats in the parliament in the 2019 elections.

Today, Mera25 has 6 deputies in the parliament.
