Athens Prosecutor orders preliminary probe into Varoufakis’ drug comments

The probe focuses on comments Varoufakis made during an interview in which he described taking drugs as “an amazing experience,” and will examine whether his remarks constituted incitement to drug use or promotion of narcotics, as well as any other potential offences.

During the interview, the former finance minister was asked whether he had ever attended a rave party and tried drugs, to which he replied affirmatively. Varoufakis said he had taken ecstasy once in 1989 while in Sydney.

“I am not Bill Clinton, who said ‘I didn’t inhale’,” Varoufakis said, adding that the experience lasted two days and involved hours of dancing, followed by severe after-effects that led him never to take drugs again.

The outcome of the preliminary investigation will determine whether further legal action will be pursued.
