Progress expected in Syros Catholic Diocese embezzlement case

The preliminary investigation into a potentially major financial scandal involving the Catholic Diocese of Syros is expected to conclude within the coming days, possibly as early as next week, Kathimerini understands.

The probe centers on the alleged transfer of 3 million euros from the Diocese’s bank account to five accounts linked to a Patra-based nightclub owner. The businessman, already convicted in the past for extorting a clergyman, is suspected of receiving the funds over a seven-to-eight-year period.

The case, initially brought to light by Greece’s Anti-Money Laundering Authority, has potential criminal implications. Prosecutors are reportedly preparing felony charges including embezzlement, incitement to embezzlement and money laundering.

One senior cleric with access to the implicated account resigned following the scandal; his resignation was accepted by the Vatican just 10 days ago, and a high-ranking member of the Athens Diocese has since been appointed as caretaker in Syros.

The scandal erupted after it was revealed that Church funds were used to sublease a nightclub and may have also fueled gambling activity. The Catholic Church in Greece has yet to make a formal statement, citing a lack of official updates from authorities.
