Weapons cache discovered in garbage bin in Kaisariani-Athens
A passerby’s tip to the police in the early hours of Tuesday set off a major security response in Kaisariani-Athens, after an entire arsenal was found discarded in a neighborhood garbage container.
A bomb disposal unit (TEEM) was immediately dispatched to the scene. Following a thorough inspection, officers uncovered a wide range of weapons, ammunition, and even religious artifacts.
According to official sources, the items discovered included:
Two grenade release levers (type Arges), corroded
A defensive hand grenade with detonator mechanism
Ten mortar shell heads and other related parts
Various calibers of ammunition
A disassembled 22mm handgun
Corroded weapon components dating back to World War II
Three revolver frames
The iron frame of a Thompson submachine gun from the same period
The body of a heavy machine gun of unknown type
Brass knuckles, handcuffs, two expandable batons, cartridge pouches, and several gun bolts
14 religious icons
The discovery of the icons among the weapons has raised questions about the origins and purpose of the collection.
The case is now under investigation by the Forensic Department of the Hellenic Police’s Counter-Terrorism Unit (YDEEA), which is working to determine how such an arsenal ended up in a public waste container and who may have been responsible for disposing of it.
