University staff member taught for 12 years without a recognized degree, investigation reveals

A recent investigation by the National Transparency Authority (NTA), prompted by a formal complaint, found that an individual served as adjunct teaching staff at a higher education institution in Northern Greece from 2005 to 2017, despite not holding an officially recognized degree.

According to the findings, the individual in question has a close familial relationship with the university’s president.

The investigation further revealed that the evaluation process for adjunct teaching positions was conducted by an unauthorized committee. This committee allegedly drafted evaluation reports prior to the application deadline, strongly suggesting a pre-determined outcome.

The individual reportedly inflated his evaluation score without submitting any supporting qualifications, while more qualified candidates were excluded under questionable pretexts.

Moreover, until 2020, the same individual also participated in publicly funded research projects at the university. In these projects, the individual’s close relative served as the principal researcher.

The total budget of the research programs in which the individual was involved—under the supervision of his relative—amounted to €87,360.

The NTA’s final report has been submitted to the Minister of Education, the relevant university authorities, and the public prosecutor’s office for further action.
