Two Turks detained in Greece on 'espionage' charges

In a statement made by the Greek police yesterday, it was stated that unidentified persons were detained for flying drones over the naval base on the island of Paros.
The statement said the suspects travelled to the island of Paros on Friday and stayed at a hotel there.
The duo reportedly flew a drone over the Greek navy military base on the island for 10 minutes the following day.
It was also shared that the Naval Academy was also located on the land.
The suspects were arrested on Saturday by security forces in the town of Monemvasia in the province of Lakonia in the Peloponnese after leaving Paros, police said.
The Turkish nationals have been sent to the capital Athens for interrogation by the National Intelligence Organisation (NIA), the statement said.
It was also stated that the IED would analyse the images taken by the drone.
In 2020, Greece arrested 38-year-old Sebahattin Bayram, a contracted secretary at the Turkish Consulate General in Rhodes, and 55-year-old Mehmet Nezametin, a cook on a cruise ship sailing between Meis and Rhodes, on espionage charges.
Following the trials, Bayram was sentenced to 5 years in prison and Nezametin to 4 years in 2021. The Turkish Foreign Ministry condemned the prison sentence.
Last year, Türkiye sentenced Muhammed Amar Ampara, a Syrian who was caught by MIT for spying for Greece, to 12.5 years in prison.
