Turkish ambassador hails ‘positive climate’

Turkish Ambassador to Greece Cagatay Erciyes conveyed Ankara’s desire to “maintain and strengthen” the positive momentum in ties between the two countries, saying that the expected talks between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis during a meeting of the High-Level Cooperation Council in Ankara, expected to take place in the next few months, is an “important step” to this end.

“Our leaders have taken specific steps over the past two years to strengthen dialogue, increase high-level engagements and foster a positive climate between our nations,” Erciyes told an event at the embassy in Athens titled “A Juster World is Possible.”

“We would like to maintain and enhance this positive climate for the mutual benefit of our nations,” he said.

The diplomat also expressed confidence that Greece and Turkiye would be able “to address and resolve all outstanding issues between our countries in accordance with international law,” through “continuous dialogue,” though he did not refer specifically to the key differences between the two neighbors – namely, maritime borders and the delimitation of an exclusive economic zone – or to the divergent views on what issues could be put to international arbitration.
